Keto Dog treat Recipe. Grain free & Gluten Free (2024)

So, is Keto for dogs a thing? If not, it should be because it’s the way that they should be eating anyway.

These healthy, grain free dog treats are the cats meow. Now if only I could get my husband to stop eating them…

You can make these as easy or as complicated as you want to…I choose easy.

You can roll out the dough and make cute done bone shaped treats but my little buddy doesn’t have a preference so I just roll them up and bake them as is.

Isn’t he a handsome boy? (Yes, this is a shameless ploy to show you unsolicited photos of my dog Ivan).

Why these treats are grain free…

Feeding your dog a diet that is grain free ~ or at least low in grains is important because just like us, they have an insulin response to high carb foods.

I am not a vet but I know that sugar is bad for dogs and can cause the same nasty issues for them. Weight gain, diabetes and candida infections are all caused from a diet high in grains. Guess what they put in cheap dog food and cheap dog treats?

And, when I say “cheap”, I don’t mean inexpensive. I mean treats laden with processed flour, sugar and preservatives.

Recently, someone gave me some “Puperoni” treats for my dogs. Imagine my dismay when I saw sugar and propylene glycol otherwise known as anti-freeze in the list of ingredients…..I was angry.

Not at the kind person who gave me the treats, but @Big Heart Pet Brands. WHAT ARE THEY THINKING?

That was a rhetorical question…it’s a cheap way to emulsify oils. They were thinking of their bottom line, not your best friend.

There is so much wrong with this list of ingredients! I am not going to go into why because this is a recipe post and there are plenty of sources for the toxins on this list. But right off of the top of my head I see SIX items that I know are toxic to dogs. SIX!

Sure, my dogs love them. But you know what? They like these homemade dog treats just as much. Plus, they’re healthy and don’t cost nearly as much.

If you do buy dog treats…

I realize that not everyone has time to make dog treats ALL of the time. ( I am in this category too).

But if you do choose to buy dog treats they should be grain free and not include any gross ingredients like listed above. This small family owned business makes organic, grain free treats for dogs. While they are not super cheap…they are also not super “cheap” (as in poisonous).

Recipe Tips…

Gather your stuff. This is going to be quick because these are really easy to make..

  • I use frozen pumpkin puree but if you are using canned make sure it is sugar free.
  • It helps to have the eggs at room temperature .

If the eggs are cold it will make it more difficult to mix in the nut butter and coconut oil. Coconut oil clumps up when it’s mixed with cold ingredients.

Put the eggs in a bowl of warm water for a few minutes if you don’t want to wait for them to come to room temp.

  • This dough can be rolled out and cut with a cookie cutter.

The dough will be soft and you should probably roll it out between two sheets of parchment paper.

Don’t be shy about using a lot of coconut flour to keep it from sticking to your cookie cutter.

  • Next time I will bake these on parchment paper.

They didn’t get “too” stuck to the pan but I am all about ease. Cleaning the pans was a little harder…

  • These take 40 minutes to bake.

But they will be soft…like a soft cookie. My dog Ivan says he like a little crunch so I left them in the oven after I turned it off overnight. This process sort of dry the treats out in the same way that we get our Keto Crackers so crunchy….

  • My husband Thom and my Tween both liked these!

So yeah, they tried the dog treats and wanted me to mention that if you add a 1/2 cup to 1 cup of of Keto Approved sweetener like Allulose that they would be awesome people treats.

Maybe we’ll try those next?

If this post inspires you to want to make some delicious Keto cookies or low carbs dessert for yourself…we have those covered too.

  • I store these in the fridge.

These have a lot of eggs in the recipe so I feel safer storing them in the fridge. This recipe makes 1.5 inch treats. You can make them smaller if you have a small dog.

But, the point is that it will take more than just a couple of days for my doggos to finish them. I mean, they are goodish dogs but they cant eat treats all day long.

We consider our dogs to be part of the family.

Actually, we call our nuclear family unit “the pack”. So I guess we consider ourselves dogs. We love them and I know that you love your dog too.

No, we don’t buy the most expensive dog food on the market, but we do pay attention to how much grain is in their food. In fact there is a company that makes low carbohydrate dog food but it’s pretty spendy – especially if you have a big dog.

We usually give them a little bit of sugar free peanut butter or a new bone as treats.

The packaged dog treats are expensive and just not that great…

These are the healthiest dog treats my boy eats.

Check the labels on the food and treats that you give your dog, just like you do for yourself.

Cheers to you and your happy, healthy dog (fur baby)!

Just one last photo of Ethel (Effie). Our beautiful girl….looking for a treat.
