"This is a compilation of a couple of different recipes I found on the web. My husband loves sweet potatoes with LOTS of marshmallows and wanted a casserole like one of his aunts used to make. After a few trials, this was the final incarnation. It is now a Thanksgiving staple for both his and my family's dinners."

  1. Do you cook the yams before mashing them?

  2. I am confused by this: "Top with a layer of marshmallows, then add remaining mixture." To me, that says put yam mixture on top of marshmallows. Why only add half of mixture? I would think to add entire mixture and top with marshmallows. Please advise! thanks!

  1. This was great! I made this for Thanksgiving. I used fresh sweet potatoes and quadrupled the recipe and it was a hit. I did add in some vanilla extract as well and a pinch of nutmeg. This was easy and a success for my first hosted Thanksgiving dinner!

  2. This casserole is amazing, but if you're like me and feel the need to follow recipes to the letter, you're going to have trouble with the pan size. It says to use a 1 quart baking dish, but just the can of yams alone is 1.25 quarts. I used a 1.5 quart dish and it was JUST big enough. 2 quarts would probably work even better. Otherwise, delicious as is!

  3. My daughter made this for Thanksgiving, and we loved it! She baked 2.5 lbs. sweet potatoes, and only used marshmallows on top. Thanks for such an easy and good recipe.

  4. I gave this recipe 5 stars! This recipe was so easy and tasted just good as using fresh cooked sweet potatoes. When I made this recipe I only had one each 15oz and 12oz cans. So I cut down on the other ingredients a bit. Also I used Splenda brown sugar. I didn't use near as many marshmallows as directed. Overall this was so good and I will make this recipe again for sure! Thanks for posting! Christine (internetnut)

  5. Thank goodness I found this again! I've started doing a lot of the dishes for my family holiday gatherings (18 people) and this was a HUGE hit on Thanksgiving! I'll be making it again for Christmas dinner. My aunt usually makes it and uses nuts in hers, but they enjoyed it more without the nuts...yay! Thanks!

Tweaks

  1. Use 3 large fresh yams. Peel and Cut into chunks. Boil until soft. Then follow recipe as directed, except you don't have to melt the butter/margarine because the heat of the yams will melt it as you mix it in.

  2. I have been making this for years. I have added fresh grated nutmeg and cinnamon. I recently got married and my husband loves it!
