The potential of India’s furniture market has drawn several leading international players to the country
New Delhi: The size of the Indian furniture market is about $17.56 billion in 2024. It is expected to reach $29.86 billion by 2029, growing at a CAGR of 11.20% during the forecast period (2024- 2029) as per Mordor Intelligence. India’s expanding middle class and increasing disposable income presenta lucrative market for premium and designer furniture. The growing aspirations are drawing several international brands to the market.

Ikea
Ikea is a Swedish multinational conglomerate that designs and sells ready-to-assemble furniture, kitchen appliances, and home accessories. Founded in 1943 by Ingvar Kamprad, IKEA has since become one of the world’s largest retailers of furniture and home products. The name IKEA is an acronym that stands for Ingvar Kamprad (the founder’s name), Elmtaryd (the farm where he grew up), and Agunnaryd (his hometown in Smaland, Sweden).
Ikea is known for its modern and functional designs, affordable prices, and the concept of ȷ at-pack furniture. The company’s stores are designed with a speciȱ c layout, guiding customers through a showroom and then to a self-service warehouse where they can collect the products they want.
In addition to furniture, Ikea offers a wide range of products, including kitchen appliances, textiles, lighting, home decor, and more. As of 21 December, the company had 470 stores in 63 markets. Ikea entered the Indian market in August 2018 with its first store in Hyderabad. The opening of the Hyderabad store marked a significant milestone for
Ikea as it ventured into the South Asian market. The company’s entry into India was met with anticipation, given India’s large and growing consumer market.
Ikea today has ȱ ve stores in India. Apart from the inaugural store in Hyderabad, it has three stores in Mumbai—Navi Mumbai, Worli City, and R City Mall—and one store in Bengaluru. In July 2023, Ingka Group, the parent company of Ikea, announced that it will also be launching a shopping centres in the country, named Lykli. The malls would be
launched through Ikea’s sister concern, Ingka Centres. The ȱ first Lykli Mall is scheduled to open in the New Delhi suburbs of Gurugram in 2025.
