Fifty years ago, in 1965, Aranzazu Hoteles, the first Basque hotel chain, was born. At that time, a major conference on iron ore, the mineral which pumped the heart of Bilbao of the time, showed the need to build a hotel to house such an important event. The Atutxa family decided to accept this challenge and opened what would be the first of its hotels: the Hotel Aranzazu. Their entrepreneurial spirit did not wane, and other hotel establishments were opened. One of its key business actions, was the purchase of the Hotel Carlton (*****), located in Bilbao. The building was the headquarters of the Basque Government during the Civil War and was listed as an architectural, historical and cultural monument in 1995.
In addition to the majestic Hotel Carlton, the chain consists of: the Hotel San Sebastián (****), located in the capital of Gipuzkoa; the modern Hotel Abando (****), which rises in the centre of Bilbao and the Hotel Los Agustinos (****), located in the beautiful town of Haro, La Rioja, a charming refuge with more than seven centuries of history condensed in its spectacular cloister.
Aranzazu hotels, a hotel chain created in Bilbao, has successfully established itself in these territories, where its hotels are part of the social, economic and cultural life of the Basque Country and La Rioja. However, the true foundations of this chain are to be found in the Arratia Valley, in the town of Aranzazu, where the origins of the Atutxa family lie. From this spatial and emotional coordinate, the chain has gained strength over the past fifty years and written a history of half a century which would have never been completed without the help and trust of our guests who have, on occasion, chosen us. Therefore, for having made this journey with us, we wish to thank you on our 50th anniversary: eskerrik asko.
